Belmont Hill’s Jovan J. wasn’t the only one to reach 1,000 points this past Winter season. Winsor’s own Alina B. ’18 made Winsor history as the second student to reach 1,000 points. She succeeds Emily W. ’09, who also made her monumental basket during her junior year.

The Winsor Varsity Basketball team had a relatively successful season compared to previous years, ending with a record of 9-5 in the league, and 12-8 overall. The season included many close games against teams such as Dana Hall, Berwick, and Portsmouth Abbey. A notable achievement from this year’s season was Winsor’s win against Dana Hall for the first time since 2014. Another exciting highlight was Alina B.’s milestone of reaching her 1,000th point. Her  accomplishment came right at the end of the season during the EIL tournament. The game was against Portsmouth Abbey, a team Winsor had beaten during both times they came face to face previously.

Alina averaged 20.2 points per game this past season, and only needed 25 more to reach 1,000 points, so many were hoping that she would be able to get her 1,000th point by the end of the tournament. Alina had not told her team that she was close to this milestone, but fortunately the coaches informed the team. Emily H. ’19 says that she “wanted to maintain [her] excitement and refrain from telling Alina that [the whole team] knew because surprising her… would be so much more exciting and [create] a more memorable moment.” The team was very supportive and extremely proud of Alina, as displayed in the photo.

The 1,000th point was truly an exciting and memorable moment. Elizabeth H. ’18 passed to Alina, who was posting up on the block. Alina was being guarded by a smaller girl, so she easily made a quick move and finished with a hook shot. She finished the game with 32 points.

After the game, Alina, like the true team player she is, said,  “For most of the game, I was trying to focus on winning the game, rather than my own scoring, but by the second half, we had a big enough lead that I realized I was really close to the 1,000th [point]. At that point, I started really looking forward to it, and that was an amazing feeling.” Alina was an amazing captain this past year, and the whole team is excited for her to continue her captainship next season.
