boygenius: On Tour

On September 25, I (Aoife) had the pleasure of attending the boygenius concert at Fenway’s MGM Music Hall. boygenius is a supergroup composed of indie rock darlings Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker, known affectionately as “the boys” by their fans. It’s no secret that boygenius is one of my favorite bands, so I had the time of my life at the concert. Still, we (Aoife and Sophie) also wanted to learn about the experiences of other Winsor community members who attended the concert.

We interviewed Hillary Browne ’24, who described how she discovered boygenius by listening to Phoebe Bridgers and fell in love with the group because of “how both their voices and songwriting complement each other in all of their songs.” Browne noted that “the most memorable part of the concert” was the encore, when “the boys” announced their new EP, The Rest, which came out on October 13. She also recounted the audience’s collective “shock and awe” when the band brought out Irish singer-songwriter Hozier as a special guest. With boygenius’ and Hozier’s status as indie rock royalty, there is a large amount of overlap between the two fan bases, so the crowd’s energy at the end of the night was unforgettable. Between the new EP and Hozier’s appearance, I also found the encore the most memorable part of the show. In addition, hearing my favorite boygenius song, ‘Me & My Dog,’ live was also a stand-out moment.

Multiple Winsor sources confirmed that Mx. Kelsey was also in attendance that electric night. Mx. Kesley commented that their journey with boygenius started with Lucy Dacus: “I think her voice is phenomenal, and I’m a big fan of the guitarist she records with… Through following her I learned about the first boygenius EP when it dropped [in 2018], and the rest was history.” For many fans, Hozier’s guest appearance was definitely a highlight of the show, but for Mx. Kelsey it was more than just his appearance. They commented, “While I know the crowd was mostly losing its mind over the Hozier appearance, I was really excited to hear them play ‘Salt in the Wound’ as an encore.” ‘Salt in the Wound’ is a deep cut from the band’s 2018 EP, so Mx. Kelsey commented that “It came as a surprise choice, but has always been one I’ve hoped to hear them play live.” From teenagers to English teachers, this was a concert for the ages!
