The yellow school bus is a staple of many schools around the country, but what makes Winsor buses so special? Our bus drivers are some of the kindest and most dedicated people, but we don’t often stop to think about how much they do for our community. The Banner had the opportunity to interview Johnny, the driver of Bus 6 (Framingham, Weston, and West Newton). Johnny has been living in the Boston area for around 30 years and has been a bus driver for 27 years. He began driving for Winsor around 6 years ago. Throughout Johnny’s responses, there is a common theme of his love for driving Winsor students.

What kind of driving do you prefer?

I used to drive for Newton Public School. Then I drove for Boston Public School, but Winsor is my favorite one. You kids, you are very nice and respectful. That’s why I love driving you.

What are your priorities when driving the Winsor school bus?

What I keep in mind when I’m driving [students] is that I don’t have to worry about what’s going on on the bus. I used to drive for Boston Public School. I had to keep my eyes on the rearview mirror to find out what was going on. But for you, it’s an easy drive for me. I love driving you. Especially in the first week of June, I’m completely sad. [I think] oh, my god, I’m not going to see them until September!

What are your hobbies outside of bus-driving?

I like to build my own custom PCs as a PC technician. I also like to work on mechanics. I have installed brakes in my own car, modifications, and stuff like that.

Do you have a relationship with other drivers with Winsor?

We are very friendly. Sometimes we talk and catch up together before the buses leave. Yes, we have a great relationship!

After listening to Johnny’s insightful responses, we were able to reflect on all the hard work he puts in for us. We admire Johnny’s consistent dedication to making sure we have a safe and clean bus to come to school in. The extra time he contributes outside of driving demonstrates his commitment to his job and to Winsor students. 

We are so grateful to have such amazing bus drivers like Johnny in the Winsor community, so we thank them for all they do to get our day off to the right start and get us home safely.
