The Students Advocating for School Spirit Club (SASS) has always had an influential role in the Winsor community, but they’re stepping up their game this fall by adding some more sport-themed activities into the mix.
SASS can always be counted on to devise creative spirit week themes that get the school excited for Under the Lights (UTL). This year, they plan to extend the energy and school pride on display during spirit week throughout the entire year.
SASS has organized a series of “Wildcat Games”, which take place on home game days. These events feature themes ranging from white-out to neon, and students are encouraged to dress up to support their peers.
One might ask: “What can I get out of this besides cheering on the Winsor sports teams?” Well, SASS has added a fun, competitive component to these games: QR codes allow attending fans to earn points for their respective Panthers or Jaguars team. These game days are an innovative way to spread school spirit and to support Winsor athletes more consistently. Ms. Burke, SASS faculty advisor, explained that “Jaguars/Panthers points will also be awarded at other community events throughout the year, such as the plays. SASS hopes to spotlight some of the amazing things going on in the Winsor community and extend the Jaguars/Panthers competition throughout the year!”
SASS has also introduced sports-oriented activities for students to take part in, including those who don’t participate in the fall athletics season. Beginning on October 6, the group organized a spike ball tournament during Friday community times. Thanks to a little friendly Panthers vs. Jaguars competition, students were able to earn points for showing up and winning games. Audrey Copeman ’24, who participated in the tournament, said, “I had so much fun! There was fun music playing and I got into the competitive mindset, ready to tally up some points for my team!”
Overall, SASS has used both watching and participating in sports as a way to boost school spirit at Winsor. The Banner can’t wait to see what they cook up next!
