The Clayroom in Brookline has been around for over two decades, and many in the community regard it as a local staple. Whether you are a talented painter and potter or just looking to pass the time, The Clayroom welcomes all. With its inviting atmosphere and reputation for inclusivity, it has built a strong following, especially among locals who appreciate the chance to express their artistic side in a supportive environment.
In recent years, pottery painting has become increasingly popular with younger generations, but paying for the piece, paints, and kiln use can become expensive. The Clayroom is one of the most affordable pottery studios in the Boston area, costing less than $40 per person on average. There is a wide selection of pieces, ranging from small figurines to large plant pots. Some of the pieces are even handmade in the studio! Additionally, all materials are provided, the instructions are very easy to follow, and no prior experience is required.
Moreover, the staff is incredibly accommodating. Aoife Keane ’27 “love[s] The Clayroom because of the staff; they are helpful, kind, and have a positive energy.” The vibe of The Clayroom is friendly and welcoming. With upbeat music playing and colorful ceramics lining the shelves, it is a space where people can unwind and tap into their creativity.
Furthermore, The Clayroom offers ceramic-making classes on the wheel. This experience includes making the items as well as painting them. Participants finish this process with three fully functional bowls or mugs. Elena Toscani ’27 “drinks out of her mug [that she made at The Clayroom] every day” and remarked, “The mugs seem like they will last forever!”
You can also bring your own food and drinks to The Clayroom. Hannah Minn ’26, who used to work at the Clayroom, remarked, “The Clayroom fosters a sense of community since it has projects for all ages. Also, the boss Doug greets many returners personally!”
As ceramic art continue to grow in popularity, The Clayroom is likely to remain a cherished part of the Brookline community. With its combination of affordability, welcoming staff, and wide variety of activities, it offers a unique and accessible outlet for artistic expression that can be enjoyed by all. ☐
