LS Athlete of the Issue: Avery Fantasia ’29

By Serena Toscani, Banner Staff

Class IV student Avery Fantasia ’29 is taking on Winsor Cross Country (WXC) for the first time this year, joining practices at the scenic Arnold Arboretum and tackling races with hundreds of feet of elevation gain. The Banner was excited to interview Fantasia and hear about her routines, highlights, and first impressions   as a member of the largest cross-country team in Winsor history!

Why did you decide to join Winsor Cross Country?

My sister, Ryan Fantasia ’24, was a WXC captain in her senior year, and she always talked about how much she loved the team environment. I  heard there were a lot of exciting team-bonding activities, like yearly summer camps in Vermont, ice cream runs to J.P. Licks,  team dinners, and “XC Prom.”

How is WXC different from other Winsor sports you have played in the past?

In the past, I was part of Winsor Soccer, Basketball, and Track and Field. WXC is distinct from the other teams because the team has more opportunities to strengthen its bond during and outside practices and races. Unlike playing on the typical turf field or track, there is something special about practicing in the Arnold Arboretum: it’s such a beautiful and peaceful place, especially after a long day in the school classroom.

What would you say if you could advise another Lower Schooler about joining the team?

Just do it. Yes, the sport is challenging, but everyone on the team has a similar experience because they are all running the same practice intervals and five-kilometer race. It is also a bonding experience to congratulate your teammates and reflect on your own  challenges and accomplishments. Another piece of advice is to reach out to the captains, coaches, or anyone you know on the team: they are all helpful, welcoming, and knowledgeable.

What’s  your favorite memory from practice or a race so far?

My favorite memory so far is definitely our cooldown run after a tough race at The Hotchkiss School. There were apple trees on the trails, and the whole team gathered to help each other grab the apples, which were very tasty! Then, we ran to a nearby lake and took a refreshing dip in the water. We also ate delicious tacos on our way back to Winsor!

Do you have a special routine before a race to calm your nerves?

For every race, I tie my hair into two braids and a ponytail with the traditional red ribbons the captains gave us. Another helpful routine the team follows before each race is the “team breath.” We huddle in a circle at the start line with our arms around each other’s shoulders and take synchronized deep breaths in and out. It helps slow my heart rate, and I now do this breathing routine before my club soccer matches!

The Banner wishes Fantasia the best in her future endeavors with Winsor Cross Country, especially as she aims to help secure the team’s 20th EIL championship title this November! ☐
