As the winter season drags on, the shorter daylight hours and colder weather can often leave us feeling unmotivated and burned out. A common struggle during this time of year, winter blues can affect our mood and energy levels. However, there are several effective ways to stay positive throughout the long winter months.
One of the simplest ways to improve your mood is by creating a welcoming environment, whether it’s in your bedroom, your study space, or even just a quiet corner anywhere in your home. Unwind by lighting a few candles, curling up with a good book, or listening to upbeat music. Visual Arts Teacher Ms. Valenza added, “I’ve always found winter challenging, but I’m in the middle of a great book, How to Winter by Kari Leibowitz… One of the suggestions is to create winter rituals that you enjoy.” She also says that she “[prefers] reading more fiction in the winter.”

Physical activity can be another great way to boost your energy. If it’s too cold to go out for a brisk walk, try some indoor activities like yoga or light movement. These exercises can relieve stress and make you feel more refreshed without leaving the comfort of your home.
On top of that, a warm drink can be a great comfort on a cold day, helping to ease the chill outside while also bringing a sense of calm and relaxation. Claire Zhang ’28 said, “Having a warm drink, like tea or hot chocolate, makes me feel a little better during the winter.” Surrounding yourself in a warm atmosphere after a long day at school can provide a relaxing escape from the cold, gloomy weather.
Hanging out with friends is another great way to enjoy community and decrease stress. “Spending time with friends always helps lift my mood and take my mind off of homework,” says Chrissy Mayer ’28. Being in the company of your friends can be a great distraction from the drab weather.
By incorporating small joys into our daily routines during winter months, we can overcome winter blues and find silver linings in this gloomy and cold season. ☐
