MLB Playoffs

By Abby Whelan

The Boston Red Sox have won nine World Series titles…but they failed to make the playoffs this year. Even though the Red Sox are not competing in the World Series, you should still be watching the games!

The Major League Baseball (MLB) World Series starts October 28 and, if necessary, will go until November 5. This year, the Houston Astros are back in the World Series to compete against the Philadelphia Phillies. Last year, our Boston Red Sox made it to the American League Championship Series against the Houston Astros but lost the series 4–2. In the 2021 World Series, the Houston Astros lost to the Atlanta Braves and are back for redemption after beating Red Sox’s famous rivals the New York Yankees in the 2022 American League Championship.

Avid Boston sports fan Ms. Reynolds commented that although “it was a disappointing season and it always makes for an exciting fall when the Red Sox are in the playoffs,” she is “really excited that the Yankees got swept and are out.”

When watching the 2022 World Series, you should be on the lookout for some familiar faces such as Kyle Schwarber and Christian Vázquez. Cate Ewald ’25 commented that she “will be watching the World Series to see [those] former Red Sox players.” Kyle Schwarber played as a dominant hitter for the Red Sox’s 2021 season. Throughout his 41 games being a part of the Red Sox, he piled up 39 hits and seven home runs while maintaining an impressive .291 batting average and .975 ops. After signing a four-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, Schwarber has become a crucial addition to the team. Although we miss his powerful hitting, we hope to see him do well in the upcoming World Series.

Christian Vázquez had been on the Red Sox for 15 years until he was traded to the Houston Astros in the middle of the 2022 season. Vázquez played as the Red Sox’s go-to catcher with an impressive batting average of .261. It was very hard to see Vázquez leave, but we hope he continues his success in the World Series.

Although it is bittersweet to see the players Boston loved compete on different teams, we are so excited to watch them play. Therefore, when you are not too busy cheering on the Winsor sports teams, make sure to check out the 2022 World Series!
