Do you own any succulents? A great starting plant for beginners, succulents can liven up the space of any room, whether it be your desk at home or a homeroom at Winsor, and offer many benefits to the environment.
Succulents are known for being drought-resistant and able to survive without much care. They have evolved in desert and alpine ecosystems to thrive on as little as mist and dew. Because of their adaptability, succulents are great for any beginning gardener. According to Architectural Digest, to take care of succulents, you only need to water them every once in a while, make sure they get enough light, and repot them when needed. One key watering tip is to water the soil directly, not the plant itself.
Succulents can brighten any room in virtually any climate and help the environment in a variety of ways. Research from the National Library of Medicine has shown that succulents help purify the air by removing volatile organic compounds and emitting water vapor that pulls contaminated air into the roots of the plant for nutrients, especially a species called the dragon tree, part of the Dracaena genus. Since they emit water, succulents also improve the humidity of your home, and help with common colds, sore throats, dry coughs, and dry skin. Moreover, according to the American Psychological Association, succulents help with relieving stress and enhancing memory. Some recommended types of succulents include Jade Plants (Crassula ovata), Aloe Vera (Aloe vera), Pincushion Cacti (Mammillaria crinita), Hens and Chicks (Sempervivum tectorum), Ball Cacti (Parodia magnifica), and Dudleya (which includes multiple species of the Echeveria genus). All are highly recommended, and can serve many purposes while being a great aesthetic decoration. Most succulents look great with a white or red clay pot, but don’t let that stop you! They can also go very well with colorful schemes, and can be placed on your kitchen counter, homeroom table at Winsor, a desk or bookshelf at home, or placed as a hanging decoration. Overall, succulents are a great and easy addition to your surroundings, so be sure to pick one up at your local greenhouse!
